ACTIVISM, ARTS EDUCATION, AND PRINTED MATTER (2017)

In 2017, Garry and I were invited by the Toronto Art Book Fair (TABF) to show an array of our work and decided to organize a selection of our publications and artist books into ACTIVISM, ARTS EDUCATION, PRINTED MATTER. Originally curated and shown at the TABF and subsequently hosted at grunt gallery in conjunction with the Vancouver Art Book Fair, this show highlighted a range of our printed works in the contexts of both our teaching and artistic practices.

The books and ephemera fell into various categories including: Artist Books by Students; Class Books developed during Printed Matter classes Garry and I taught at Emily Carr and UBC; thirteen posters I'd kept from the "See Red Women’s Workshop" (London, UK, 1987); a sampling of The North End posters I collected along with my The North End – Volume I and II publications; Garry's thirty-plus Portikus posters collected in 1998 when he showed Wall Paintings and Related Works, 1974 – 1995 there; What’s Going On? posters from my activist work in the 1980s, bringing attention to nuclear submarines in the Halifax Harbour (1984) and the lack of affordable housing in that city (1985); and various posters that Garry made over the years which generally pushed back against traditional art and design conventions.
