ENERGY (2013)
"ENERGY" (images 2-7) is a multi-page work included in the class book made during the Art History and Visual Arts (AHVA) course, Printed Matter, taught by Cathy Busby and Garry Neill Kennedy at the University of British Columbia in 2013.
For this series, Busby focused on the disconnect between the ingredients and branding of energy drinks. Working within her local Shoppers Drug Mart in Kingsgate Mall, Busby selected a range of sports and energy drinks then used the in-store photocopier to scan the cans before returning them to their shelves. She then blew these images up, highlighting the drinks ingredients.
This project draws on Busby's longstanding interest in branding and advertising, and in this case the myth of the energy drink with its inherent disconnect between the effects the drink promises vs. what they are materially made up of—a mix of water, sugar and highly synthetic ingredients.
