24/7 AT WORK Aberdeen (2008)
24/7 AT WORK was part of No Time To Lose, curated by Melina Placentile for Peacock Visual Arts (Aberdeen, Scotland). It was site-specifically located at the Aberdeen Business School Library in Robert Gordon University. The work was made up of a list of ‘management speak,' and a collection of self-maintenance products—including deodorants and power drinks—exhibited alongside critical books on management and branding sourced from the library. A vertical vitrine was positioned by the main entrance just past the turnstiles and a secondary low-rise vitrine was located between these turnstiles.
24/7 AT WORK began with a collection of ‘management speak’ which I developed into a list that was first exhibited at Eyelevel Gallery (Halifax, 2004) as a floor-to-ceiling printout. The next year I presented this list along with self-maintenance products and management books at Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Art Gallery in the MSVU Library (Halifax, 2005). The orange vinyl list printed on the vitrine's in No Time To Lose are an updated version of these earlier lists.
All the products I focus on in 24/7 AT WORK are aimed at promoting an inexhaustible worker and are used to suggest a critical narrative on the trajectory of work-life trends.
