Self-Help Book Library, Artspeak (2014)
Self-Help Book Library (Artspeak, 2014) is the third iteration of this work. It was first exhibited at the New Museum for Contemporary Art (New York, 1994) as a response to Bob Flanagan's Visiting Hours exhibition, and later expanded into Where Does It Hurt? (Walter Phillips Gallery off-site, Banff Centre for the Arts, Calgary, 1996).
For Self-Help Book Library, Busby brought together a couple hundred used self-help books, with titles like How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, My Mother My Self, and The Courage to Heal, for visitors to read during the exhibition.
This library is part of a larger body of work which focus on pain and its management, other works include How... (2001), Testdrive (2002), and the collaborative anthology, When Pain Strikes (1999).
