WHEN PAIN STRIKES (1999)
When Pain Strikes is an interdisciplinary anthology about pain and methodologies for it's relief edited by Cathy Busby, Kim Sawchuk and Bill Burns for the Theory Out of Bounds Series, published by the University of Minnesota Press and The Banff Centre for the Arts (1999).
When Pain Strikes offers a multitude of entry points to process this complex topic including artwork, scholarly analysis, poetic and literary texts, and conversations with activists. Throughout the books five sections ("Measure It," "Scream and Yell," "Cut It Open," "Take a Pill," and "Intensify It") readers are asked to reflect on what they do 'when pain strikes' as they encounter the multi-modal reactions being presented. The topics range from biomedical and pharmacological responses, to surgical interventions and therapeutic techniques.
