BRANDED (2008)
Cathy Busby's wall-text painting BRANDED was installed at Render, now the University of Waterloo Art Gallery (Waterloo, Ontario), in 2008.
This multi-wall installation was composed of taglines from universities and corporations that were organized into categories taken from key recurring slogan words: World, You, Think, Spirit, Passion, Life, Knowledge, Inspiration, Innovation, and Excellence. Each category was assigned a colour chosen from Fashion Trendsetter's Autumn/Winter trends for 2008/2009. BRANDED napkins were also distributed at various food court outlets on campus while the work was up as a humorous form of marketing.
A small-format publication, also entitled BRANDED (120 pp), was produced to accompany the exhibition. This publication held page-after-page of slogans printed on coloured backgrounds followed by a complete list of the sources, and contextualizing correspondence between Busby and media artist and writer Garry Kibbins.
BRANDED is a precursor to Inspiring, another wall-text painting work which focuses on marketing and University slogans.
