Synthesizing Sound and Protection at Curve/Diagonal (2017)
Hands Across The Sky is a collaborative performance between Charlene Vickers and Cathy Busby in support of Indigenous sovereignty and protection of lands and waters throughout Turtle Island.
Performed in and around Robert Maki's sculpture, Curve/Diagonal, this site-specific work incorporates digital, bodily and recorded sound to address water and land protection.
Using a collection of props, including paper megaphones, blankets, blanket banners, a woven rug, a walkman, Red Bull, Pow Wow cassette and handmade shakers, Vickers and Busby activate the site working with and riffing off the sculpture to re-sound both bodily and land presence. Using a culmination of spoken words, hollering, hidden messages, and surprises the artists call to the audience as an emancipatory strategy, engaging them in their protest.
