SUBSIDIZED (2019)
Subsidized is made up of headlines from mainstream and smaller media sources regarding subsidies and tax breaks afforded to the fossil fuel industry. By transposing text to fill the largest span of available wall space, this work displays the ways these words hold power and when they are not upheld, as is the case with these policies, the impacts are tangible.
For this installation in Public Volumes at the Small Arms Inspection Building in Mississauga, I chose an under-utilized hallway space which allowed for indoor/outdoor viewing. The colour scheme for the work came from the pallet for Budget Cuts, made up of the colours of the immediate surrounding environment around the original billboard installed at PAVED/AKA Gallery in Saskatoon. Budget Cuts (2012), Cut and Muzzled (2014), and Subsidized (2019) all address large scale financial restrictions and are all linked through their colour pallet.
