STEVE'S VINYL (2013)
Steve’s Vinyl was an art installation and performance giveaway of the nearly two-hundred vinyl records left to me by my late brother, Steve Busby (1953-1993), a gay man who died of an AIDS-related illness. Taking place at the Khyber Centre for the Arts, the event was organized to coincide with World AIDS Day (Dec 3, 2011).
As a follow up of the 2011 performance, I planned to make a book. Echoing the 200 albums in the giveaway, the publications were printed in an addition of 200. This book transferred the weight and intention of the records into a published form, and acted as another way to remember and honour Steve's life.
The book begins by introducing the reader to Steve in photos and text. It then provides insight into the brief yet vibrant life span of the work from wall-painting, to installation, to giveaway, and take down. It zero's in on drawings attendees left on the wall after choosing their record, and includes testaments noting why people chose the albums they did. The book ends with an overview of "The Collection," archiving Steve's music library in full.
This publication is currently out of print, previously available at Printed Matter, New York.
Steve's Vinyl is featured in uncovering artists books (2019) by Geraldine Davis (pp 154-159), available at Art Metropole.
